About Jon

Founder Jon Rapp began employment in the social services field in 1994 while working for a social service agency in Austin, TX. That first experience led to becoming an employee of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC) in Sturgis, SD. Jon spent five years there holding a variety of different positions while working with individuals with various types of developmental disabilities.

Jon then transitioned on to Rapid City Regional Hospital – Behavioral Health where he worked for three years, first as an admissions assessment counselor and then as the head Social Worker on the adolescent ward. Next, he worked two years for Behavioral Management Systems (BMS), conducting mental health evaluations on incoming involuntarily committed individuals from surrounding communities and states to determine whether or not an involuntary psychiatric admission was warranted.

About Slate Creek

In 2004, Slate Creek Counseling, P.C. was created to streamline the process of evaluating mental health holds and testifying at mental health hearings at RCRW, creating a partnership with Pennington County and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Jon and his family moved back home to Pierre, SD in 2008. Slate Creek established yearly contracts with Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) to provide individual mental health therapy for adolescents (2nd grade through 12th grade) and their families on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School and Tiospaye Topa School. He has also been serving as a mental health consultant for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s Infant & Toddler program.

Covid-19 has changed the direction Slate Creek was moving. So, after 12 years, “it” has changed course to adapt to what is taking place in the world. It’s founder, Jon Rapp, always wanted to transition from working in a school system to the private sector. Hence, Slate Creek is now a counseling center in the Pierre/Fort Pierre area, serving individuals and families throughout central South Dakota through in-person sessions at his office or virtual sessions through teletherapy.
